We offer Shiatsu to clients as part of the Centre's holistic
approach to care. All Shiatsu practitioners are fully
qualified members of a professional body.
What is Shiatsu?
Literally meaning 'finger pressure' shiatsu is a holistic therapy
originating from Japan. It utilises elements of traditional
Chinese medicine, through pressure points and energy lines,
and combines this with stretches and joint rotations to
provide a whole body therapy. This helps to ease aches and
pains as well as realigning energy imbalances.
At the Olive Tree we offer Zen Shiatsu which is noted for
being particularly gentle, soothing and profound.
From a Western perspective, shiatsu affects the
autonomic nervous system reducing over activity caused by
stress and illness, increasing resistance to both. It can
help improve the circulation of blood and lymph, strengthen
muscle tone, improve the function of internal organs, and
can have a positive effect on the immune system. Its role in
prevention is as important as the recovery of existing
problems.
How can shiatsu help?
Shiatsu has been known to help with a number of conditions:
- Symptoms arising from stress and anxiety
- Symptoms arising from depression
- Joint pain
- Reduced mobility
- Asthmatic symptoms
- Headache
- Migraine
What to expect during a treatment
Treatment is usually carried out on a futon on the floor, although it is
possible to use a therapy couch or a chair. Clients are not
expected to undress but will need to wear loose, comfortable
clothing.
Treatment lasts about 1 hour, although the clients needs
are always taken into consideration. Gentle pressure is applied
along the energy lines and pressure points on the body with
hands, elbows, knees or feet; there may also be more focussed
work to release tight or congested areas.
After the treatment it is advisable to rest, avoid
strenuous activity, and drink plenty of water or fruit juice.
The practitioner may suggest some exercises to be done
between sessions as part of the therapy, these are always
optional.
How many sessions can I have?
Prior to using the complimentary therapies and treatments at the Olive Tree, you will meet
with the Centre Manager to discuss the different therapies on offer and agree those which
would best support your needs.
Members are entitled to 4 free sessions of any therapy they choose or a combination of therapies.
Following this we would request that circumstances allowing, members make a minimum donation
of £5.00 per session
Where will the therapy take place?
All therapy sessions take place in our dedicated therapy room at the centre.
We have an electric couch which can be lowered to assist those with mobility difficulties.
It can also be adjusted to a sitting or semi sitting position for those who prefer not to lie flat.
Please discuss this with your therapist.
How do I book a therapy session?
All sessions are booked through the manager or an appointed volunteer.
You can book in person, by telephone or by e-mail.
