Massage

We offer massage to clients as part of the centre's holistic approach to care. All therapists are fully qualified members of a professional body.

What is massage?

The recognition that massage and touch can have a therapeutic value dates back to as early as 250BC. There is much research evidence that suggests massage benefits   patients both physically and mentally.

Massage is a general term for a variety of techniques that involve manipulation of the soft tissues of the body through gentle pressing, kneading and smoothing movements,   for therapeutic purposes. There are a number of types of massage: Swedish, Thai, Ayurvedic, remedial and sports massage, for example.

The massage offered at the centre is simple, gentle, holistic massage. However our therapists are skilled in other types of massage also and where appropriate alternatives may be discussed.

How can massage help?

Massage is very supportive and therapeutic within the context of holistic care. It can:

  • Aid relaxation
  •
  • Reduce stress and tension
  •
  • Ease anxiety
  •
  • Improve sleep pattern
  •
  • Enhance well-being
  •
  • Aid pain and symptom relief
  •

What can I expect in a treatment?

On your first visit, your therapist will take a brief history before starting your treatment. Treatments may involve all or a combination of back, neck, head, hands, arms, legs and feet.

The massage consists of a gentle rhythmic touch, with movements varied to suit your individual needs. Each session can last up to 40 minutes, and will depend on the extent of the treatment decided upon.

Massage encourages the body to flush out toxins and your therapist will advise you to drink plenty of water, in order to maintain your hydration levels and help this process.

You should feel very relaxed and maybe a little tired afterwards. Following your treatment, we are happy for you to sit quietly in the centre for a while if you wish.

How many sessions can I have?

Prior to using the complementary therapies and treatments at the Olive Tree, you will meet with the Centre Manager to discuss the different therapies on offer and agree those which would best support your needs.

Members are entitled to 4 free sessions of any therapy they choose or a combination of therapies. Following this we would request that circumstances allowing, members make a minimum donation of £5.00 per session.

Where will the therapy take place?

All therapy sessions take place in our dedicated therapy room at the centre. We have an electric couch which can be lowered to assist those with mobility difficulties. It can also be adjusted to a sitting or semi sitting position for those who prefer not to lie flat. Please discuss this with your therapist.

How do I book a therapy session?

All sessions are booked through the manager or an appointed volunteer. You can book in person, by telephone on 01293 534465 or by e-mail.
